The Battle of the Christmas Ad 2016

January 31, 2018

The battle for best Christmas ad is well underway and it's a refreshing change to see some brands move away from the traditional tearjerker to more unconventional concepts this year. We spoke to a few people in the Numo team about their favourites this festive season.

For that Christmas Feeling... Sainsbury's, Christmas is for Sharing advert Marketing Assistant Abi picked out the heart warming Sainsbury’s mini musical written by Brett McKenzie (Flight of the Conchords) and featuring James Corden’s vocals, for the best advert to give you the Christmas festive feels. Using cutting edge rapid prototype 3D printing this animation talks to us about family, head here to see behind the scenes (there's even a couple of animated robots… What’s not to love!)Proceeds from the Sainsbury's advert have been donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital to help families stay together. #ChristmasIsForSharing

“I always look forward to seeing what House of Fraser is going to come up with - So stylish” Dee, Head of Accounts Admin

For style... House of Fraser, Christmas is Coming for You

This year House of Fraser have gone for another stylish production complete with contemporary dancers and a soundtrack from Laura Mvula. Directed by award winning director Emil Nava and choreographed by Suzette Brissett (whose work recently include Little Mix and Dua Lipa), it's great to see a big brand avoid the usual Christmas clichés. For fun... Aldi, Kevin The Carrot

Both our Steve (CEO) and Stuart (Digital Marketing Consultant) have chosen the adventures of Kevin the Carrot in this year’s ad from Aldi as their winner for it's animated genius.

"Aldi have done really well to project their high quality of range of products through the finish of the advert. A lot of people who wouldn't have previously shopped with them are now converting to Aldi because of how great their produce is. I think they have hit the nail on the head" Steve, CEO

But our overall winner is Waitrose for their sophisticated visuals in Home for Christmas

Lacking in the usual jolly characters we have grown to expect Waitrose's advert isn't everyone's idea of a Christmas ad but the sophisticated visuals have made it a firm favourite with the Numo team. A tense narrative tells the take of a courageous robin who undertakes an epic journey home to Britain, where a young girl eagerly awaits his return. Turns out we can't resist a tug at the heartstrings #HomeForChristmas. Find out more here
